With the threat of cyber-attacks hanging over the heads of governments, businesses and individuals, something needs to be done. That’s why we decided to look forward as to what is being done to protect us. It is worth bearing in mind though that the harder we try to protect ourselves, the harder the criminals try to get around those protections. So, while there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic for the future, we cannot let our guard down. Below is a brief look at what we can expect to see coming online soon.
The world is more connected than it’s ever been and all the while, technological advances continue apace. These advances all pivot around seamless connectivity. This means our data is now shared and used by more platforms than ever; in the datacentre, on the cloud and even on Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Also, this trend is only going to get bigger as time goes on. The trouble is though, the more connected we become, the more vulnerable our data is.
Pressure on governments:
The recent ransomware attack on the Colonial pipeline in America shows that cyber criminals can strike at the heart of a country’s infrastructure. And if the criminals are allowed to get away with it, you can guarantee that more attacks will follow. Big businesses and citizens will demand that greater cyber protections are put around critical infrastructure.
Making AI accountable:
With so many cyber-attacks taking place day by day, keeping track of them all across new technologies and devices is impossible. By using AI though, you can dramatically accelerate the identification of new threats and respond to them. This can help help to block attacks before they can spread widely.
Mobile Malware:
There has been a spike in mobile banking malware as cyber criminals attempt to get us to had over our bank details with the innocent click of a button. Banks will be under pressure to improve their cybersecurity but they should also be educating their customers on how to spot a scam and how to report it.
5G and IoT:
As 5G continues to roll out, the amount of IoT connected devises will increase in a major way. The problem is that the IoT and their connections to networks and clouds are very much the weak link in terms of security. There needs to be a holistic approach to IoT security, combining traditional and new protections for these ever-growing networks.
Out of Sight, Out of Mind
Just because your data is stored in the cloud does not mean it is safe. Many companies already run most of their workloads in the cloud but the level of understanding about security in the cloud remains low. In fact, cloud security is often an afterthought. New solutions need to evolve to be flexible and deliver scalable protection at speed.
As the saying goes, ‘forewarned is forearmed’ and understanding what we face as we go forward is half the battle in learning how to defend ourselves against these. Cyber-attacks may be something we have to learn to live with but the better we can protect ourselves, the less of a problem they become.
